Join us for Smart Cycling (Traffic Skills 101), a class for bicyclists who have some cycling experience but want to improve their skills. The workshop will start in the classroom for discussion about safe riding techniques, then we head to the parking lot to practice some on-bike skills. We will finish the workshop with a ride on local, low-traffic roads.

*Please note that this is a TWO DAY course, October 27 and October 28.

This course is a fast-paced, two-day class that provides cyclists with the confidence to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail. We will cover the basics of bike maintenance, rules of the road, on-bike skills, and crash avoidance techniques. This class is a prerequisite for becoming a certified League Cycling Instructor from the League of American Bicyclists.

You will learn how to:

  • Perform a bike safety check before each ride
  • Properly fit your bike helmet
  • Start riding efficiently
  • Stop with control
  • Ride in a straight line
  • Identify hazards
  • Ride in proper lane position
  • Communicate effectively with others on the road

You will need a bike that is in good working order and ready to ride. You may want to bring your bike to a bike shop for a check-up before the class. You will need a helmet, comfortable clothes, closed toed shoes and a water bottle. Age 18 and up only please.

This class will be taught by MassBike Executive Director and League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructor Galen Mook
